OfflineIMAP would have been my suggestion.

I put notmuch.el in an ~/.emacs.d/ directory.  Then add this to your
.emacs file:

(add-to-list 'load-path (expand-file-name "~/.emacs.d"))
(require 'notmuch)

In the session type "M-x notmuch".
