Pedantic: isspace ((unsigned char) *str)

if (! pos || pos == str) ?

Could just return 1 here.

Is it necessary to accept trailing space?

The condition could have *pos there too for clarity, though not strictly
necessary. Would be neat to have a ctype style helper that could be
shared between this and make_boolean_term.
