Partial words on notmuch search?

$ notmuch count 'Debian'
65888
$ notmuch count '*ebian'
3
$ notmuch count '?ebian'
3
$ notmuch count 'ebian'
3
$ notmuch count '0ebian'
0
As far as I can tell, anything that is not a number or a letter is just
stripped.
This is also interesting:
$ notmuch count 'debian'
65888
$ notmuch count 'dEbian'
65888
$ notmuch count 'Debian'
65887
Where can I read more about this? (except the source :)
